HISTORY OF ROYTEC
ROYTEC is an institution, which caters to the needs of the commercial world in the area of human resource development, providing local and regional markets with access to training and education at the highest levels. ROYTEC is a private, non-sectarian business education and training institution registered with the Ministry of Science Technology and Tertiary Education (STTE). The historical beginnings of ROYTEC date back to April 1980 when the then Royal Bank of Trinidad and Tobago Limited launched its first major training seminar in Strategic Planning. This programme was so successful that it was extended to a two year tertiary level training programme called the Executive Development Programme. In 1987, ROYTEC commenced training for school leavers about to enter the world of work. The students were enrolled in the programme, Introduction to Business and Computer Technology (IBCT), which exposed them to the skills and training necessary to make the transition from school to the working environment. In June 1990, ROYTEC's services were expanded further to include adult education. An affiliation with the American Management Association (AMA) was established with the main objective being to keep business professionals abreast of the latest management applications and techniques utilized worldwide. Together with AMA, ROYTEC conducted a number of seminars in General Management, Marketing, Human Resources Management and Project Management. In 1990, the ROYTEC also brought the concept of "Video Conferencing" to the shores of Trinidad and Tobago. For the first time business practitioners were able to participate in live lectures from Management gurus such as Dr. Peter Drucker and Dr. W. E. Deming. ROYTEC also engaged in consultancy and in-house training both locally and abroad, to individuals as well as medium and small businesses. The institution also developed alliances with a number of academic and professional institutions during this period. It was in April of 1992, that ROYTEC entered the world of long-term tertiary education programmes with the launch of the Diploma in Business Administration from Wilfrid Laurier University and the American Management Association's Certificate in Management Programme. In January 1994 Associate of Science Degrees in Management (ADM) and Information Systems Management (ADISM) and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Management and Industrial and Organizational Psychology were also added to ROYTEC's offerings. These programmes met with positive responses and served to endorse ROYTEC's commitment to the development of a nation whose managers, supervisors and reporting associates possess the competence and skills to succeed in the international marketplace. ROYTEC in partnership with the Canadian Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (CAIFA) commenced the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) Programmes, in September 1996. In July 1997, ROYTEC and the University of New Brunswick (UNB) launched UNB’s Bachelor of Business Administration Programme. On May 26, 1998, ROYTEC introduced its Associate of Arts Degree in Journalism and Media Arts and in July 31st of the same year launched with the Faculty of Education of the University of New Brunswick, the UNB Bachelor of Education Degree for Primary School Teachers via Distance Learning. Through ROYTEC’s alliance with global tertiary level institutions such as AMA and the University of New Brunswick (UNB), our students and clients (which include highly reputable and dynamic organisations in both the private and public sectors both locally and regionally) have been exposed to the latest management, business and technological concepts. ROYTEC has placed great emphasis on creating a facilitative and collaborative environment, where students examine real-world issues and are required to devise practical solutions to many of the complex challenges facing business professionals today. One of ROYTEC’s chief mandates is to contribute to the national and regional development through initiatives that will be conducive to self-sufficiency, future growth and development. The strategic alliances with UNB, Monroe College of New York, AMA and Advocis (formerly CAIFA) have underscored ROYTEC’s efforts in this regard. The RBTT Group and The University of the West Indies (UWI) signed an agreement on August 10th, 2006, for the transfer of the external operations of ROYTEC. Under the terms of this agreement UWI will operate that part of ROYTEC which since 1987 provided tertiary level education and training programmes to citizens and other peoples of the region.
